Accommodation
114 rooms across six categories and four terraced floors. Every one of them looks at either Lake Wakatipu or The Remarkables — the building was set on the escarpment for exactly that reason.
Overview
The resort steps down the hillside in four terraces. Floor one holds the Alpine Classic rooms, which face the courtyard and the mountains behind; floors two and three carry the lake-facing categories; the fourth is suites only. Corridors are short — no category is more than forty paces from a lift.
Rates quoted below are indicative lead-in rates per room, per night, in New Zealand dollars, including GST and breakfast for two in the Cecil Dining Room. Winter, school holidays and event weekends carry higher rates; longer stays and packages are usually better value than the nightly rate.
From NZ$319 per night
Our entry category, and the quietest rooms in the building — they sit on the first terrace with the escarpment behind them, so no road noise reaches them at all. A king bed or two long singles, a writing desk by the window and a walk-in shower.
From NZ$389 per night
The category most guests book twice. Second and third terrace, full lake aspect, and a balcony deep enough for two chairs and a table — which matters in February, when the light on Cecil Peak holds until nine in the evening.
From NZ$465 per night
A larger room with a defined lounge corner, angled south-east so The Remarkables fill the window. Sofa converts for a third guest, and the desk is a proper working one — this is the room our conference delegates ask for by name.
From NZ$529 per night
Corner rooms on the third terrace with glazing on two sides — lake straight ahead, mountains to the left, and enough floor space for a seating group by the window rather than against a wall. Eight of them in the building, and they go first.
From NZ$715 per night
A true suite: bedroom and lounge behind separate doors, a dining table for four, and a gas fire that earns its keep from May onwards. Six of them on the fourth terrace, each with a different arrangement because the roofline changes across the building.
From NZ$1,190 per night
Two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a 40-square-metre terrace along the top of the escarpment. One only. Families take it for a week over Christmas; wedding parties take it for the Saturday. Minimum two nights, and three over public holidays.
